MAPS-RUC GCIP Information

Regional Analysis and Prediction Branch -- NOAA /OAR / FSL /FRD

The 40-km version of the Mesoscale Analysis and Prediction System (MAPS) has been producing 2-d fields (MORDS - Model Output Reduced Data Set) since 10 August 1996 and BUFR soundings (MOLTS) since 21 June 1997. New analysis and forecast fields are saved every 3 hours for GCIP. These fields are from the ongoing MAPS cycles, which assimilate new observations every 3 hours prior to May 1997, and on an hourly basis since that time.

MAPS is producing gridded fields from analyses and forecasts for GCIP and related studies of the energy and hydrological cycles, along with the Eta model (NCEP) and the GEM model (Canadian Meteorological Centre).

Further, significant improvements in RUC/MAPS for land-surface fields are now running in testing, including 20km resolution, use of high-resolution USGS land-use and soil fields, cycling of snow interior temperature and water in snowpack (not same as snow water equivalent). - November 2000.

Availability of MAPS40 MORDS/MOLTS data from NCAR's GCIP gridded data archive (MAPS MORDS/MOLTS ftp'd to NCAR every night for previous day's output)
